Seat Covers for PCP, Leased and Company Cars in Ireland: Protect the Interior Before Hand-Back

Published on 2026-10-15

A large share of new cars on Irish roads are not owned outright. They are on PCP finance, on a lease, or supplied by an employer. The deal is simple: drive the car for three or four years, then hand it back. The catch is that the car is inspected on return, and the interior is judged just as closely as the paintwork. Custom seat covers in Ireland are one of the easiest ways to make sure the seats underneath come back looking the way they left the showroom.

This guide explains why covers make sense on a car you do not own, what to check before ordering, and how to time the order so the covers are fitted early enough to do their job.

Why Hand-Back Inspections Matter

When a PCP or lease term ends, the finance company or fleet provider checks the car against a fair wear and tear standard. The exact wording differs from one agreement to the next, so read your own contract. In general, light use is accepted, while stains, burns, tears, heavy scuffing and lingering smells are treated as damage, and damage usually means a charge.

The driver's seat takes the most punishment. Every time you get in and out, the outer bolster rubs against your clothing. Jeans dye transfers onto light upholstery. Coffee gets spilled on the motorway. If you have children or a dog, the rear bench collects mud, crumbs and scratches. Over three or four years, that adds up.

A set of custom seat covers sits between daily life and the factory upholstery, so the wear lands on a surface you chose, not on the seats the finance company owns.

PCP vs Lease vs Company Car: Does It Change Anything?

The reason for protecting the seats is the same in all three cases, but the details vary a little.

  • PCP (Personal Contract Plan). You may hand the car back, trade it in or pay the final balloon payment and keep it. Clean original seats help in every scenario: a lower risk of charges if you return it, and a stronger trade-in position if you upgrade. Our post on protecting resale value explains the trade-in side in more detail.
  • Lease or long-term hire. The car always goes back, so the inspection is the main concern. Covers that keep the original upholstery clean are a straightforward way to reduce that worry.
  • Company car. The employer or fleet manager usually carries the end-of-term cost, but many companies pass excess damage charges on to the driver, or simply notice who looks after their vehicle. A tidy interior reflects well on you.

Removable, Not Permanent

The key point for any car you do not own: custom seat covers are an addition, not a modification. Nothing is glued or stapled to the seat. As described on our installation page, covers are pulled over the seat, fixed with Velcro beneath the cushion and secured with elastic hooks to the seat frame. Before hand-back, the hooks are released and the covers come off, revealing the original upholstery that has been protected since the day the covers went on.

Keep in mind that the openings for headrests, seat belts and levers are cut into the cover during fitting. That is the cover being tailored to the seat, not the seat being altered. Once those openings are cut, however, the set cannot be exchanged, so take care with vehicle details when ordering.

Airbags and Seat Electronics

Modern PCP and lease cars are usually new, which means side airbags in the front seat bolsters and often heated seats or occupancy sensors. Custom covers are designed around the airbag zones for each specific seat, which is one of the main reasons we do not recommend one-size universal covers for a car with seat-mounted airbags. Read our guide on airbag safe seat covers before you order anything for a newer vehicle, and mention heated seats when placing your order.

Choosing Materials for a Three or Four Year Term

Think about how the car will actually be used over the term.

  • Eco-leather suits most daily drivers and family cars. It wipes clean, resists everyday spills and keeps a premium look throughout the term.
  • Waterproof options are worth it if you carry wet sports gear, dogs or work equipment. See who needs waterproof seat covers.
  • Alcantara accents add grip and a sporty feel if you want the car to feel more personal while you have it.

On colour, you have two sensible routes. Match the factory interior closely so the cabin looks original, or treat the covers as your chance to personalise a car you could not spec yourself. Either way, browse the colour options and read how to match colours and stitching for ideas.

Timing: Order Early in the Term

Every set is made to order, and the standard waiting period is 6-8 weeks from payment. The protection only starts once the covers are fitted, so the earlier in the agreement you order, the more of the term the seats are protected. Ordering in the first few weeks of a new PCP or lease is ideal.

Here is what the process looks like:

  1. Check your make, model and year in the car list.
  2. Design the covers in the 3D configurator. The live price updates as you pick materials and colours.
  3. Pay online, or secure a workshop order with a €200 non-refundable deposit via Revolut. Details are on the payment options page.
  4. Wait 6-8 weeks while your set is made.
  5. Receive the covers by free tracked delivery anywhere in Ireland, or book fitting at our workshop at Unit 229, Blanchardstown Corporate Park 2, Ballycoolin Road, Dublin 15.

The full walkthrough is on the how to order page.

Fitting on a Car You Do Not Own

Many drivers of financed cars prefer professional fitting, simply because they want the openings for headrests, belts and levers cut precisely the first time. Our Dublin team does this every day. If you are confident with the step-by-step guide, home fitting is perfectly possible too. Our post on DIY installation vs professional fitting helps you decide.

Quick FAQ

Will seat covers affect my PCP or lease agreement? Covers are removable accessories, not permanent modifications. If you are unsure, check your agreement or ask your provider, as terms differ.

Do I need to remove the covers before hand-back? Usually yes, so the inspector sees the original upholstery. Release the hooks and Velcro and lift the covers off.

Can I keep the covers for my next car? Each set is cut for a specific seat pattern, so covers made for one model are unlikely to fit a different one.

How much does it cost? It depends on your car and the options you choose. The 3D configurator shows the live price as you design.
